Strengthening Epilepsy Care in Ghana – One Step at a Time
The Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG), in collaboration with the British Paediatric Neurology Association(BPNA) with support from the Global Health Partnerships, held a Paediatric Epilepsy Training Roundtable Meeting on the 7th and 8th August 2025.
In attendance were leaders from the Ministry of Health, training institutions, a patient advocate, and professional health associations who gathered to discuss how to integrate Paediatric Epilepsy Training (PET) into Ghana’s health workforce development.
Key stakeholders present included:
Mr. Thomas Larbi (President, IBE Ghana Chapter), Dr. Donkor (MOH), Peter Ayamba (President, Ghana Physician Assistants Association), Dr. Kokou Amegan-Aho (HOD, Child health; UHAS), Perpetual Kanzie (Paediatrician, KATH), Hannah-Sharron Mills (Paediatrician, KBTH), Dr. Susana Somuah (Director of Academics, GCNM), Dr. Sheila Agyeiwaa Owusu (HOD, Paediatrics, UDS), Prof. Patrick Adjei (President, Ghana Epilepsy Society), Ms. Jessica Ball (BPNA), Dr Charles Hammond (PET Country Lead and Course Director), and Dr Hilda Boye (President, PSG)
Discussions focused on:
🔹 Identifying gaps in epilepsy training
🔹 Integrating PET at different levels of health education
🔹 Strategies for implementation and sustainability
Key recommendations:
✅ Integrate PET into medical and nursing school curricula
✅ Secure funding from partners and media
✅ Increase public awareness and fight stigma
✅ Develop educational materials in local languages
✅ Dedicate February as Epilepsy Awareness Month
✅ Gather national data to support advocacy and sponsorship
With PET 1 open to all healthcare workers at the primary level, and PET 2 & 3 designed for those keen on specialising in epilepsy, the aim is clear — build a skilled workforce to improve care and support for people living with epilepsy in Ghana.
The PSG is grateful to our partners and sponsors for making this event possible. We look forward to improved care for all children with Epilepsy across Ghana.
