June 24, 2025The Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG) proudly introduces a transformative initiative aimed at improving maternal and newborn health outcomes across Ghana — the CIP-PSG Grant Project, officially titled:
“Mastering Maternal and Newborn Emergencies – Elevating Healthcare Workers’ Skills for Enhanced Quality of Care.”
About the Project
This groundbreaking project is funded under the Country Innovation Platform Ghana Pilot (CIP-Ghana), a partnership between:
- Ghana Health Service (GHS)
- USAID and the Center for Innovation and Impact (CII)
- USAID/Ghana
- Grand Challenges Canada (GCC)
- AMP Health
Together, these partners aim to tackle the pressing issue of preventable maternal and newborn deaths, especially in under-resourced regions of Ghana.
Our Dual Innovation Approach
To bring lasting impact, PSG is deploying two key innovations across selected districts:
1️⃣ Digital Innovation: The Live Digital Blackboard (LDB)
This innovative technology is being installed in maternity units of district hospitals. It connects peripheral health centers (like CHPS compounds and clinics) to a central digital dashboard for real-time monitoring of labour cases.
Inspired by the “Network of Practice Model,” the LDB enables:
- Remote tracking of all labour cases in the district
- Faster response in emergency situations
- Smoother and safer referrals between facilities
2️⃣ Service Innovation: Capacity Building through Training
Seasoned paediatricians, obstetricians, midwives, and paediatric nurses will lead comprehensive training for frontline health workers.
The focus majors on:-
- Managing maternal and newborn emergencies
- Building confidence at every level of care delivery
Where Is This Happening?
This pilot initiative is being implemented across 8 districts in the Upper West and Upper East regions of Ghana.
Our Commitment
At PSG, we believe that every newborn deserves a safe start to life, and every health worker should be equipped to make that possible. Through this project, we aim to:
- Reduce maternal and newborn deaths
- Strengthen district-level emergency response
- Build a digitally connected, skilled healthcare system
Thank You to Our Partners
We are deeply grateful to all CIP-Ghana Partners, and especially to Grand Challenges Canada for their continued support and belief in this vision.
