August 28, 2024On Wednesday, 26th June 2024 a training program was conducted for health professionals on Pediatric Epilepsy at the Modern City Hotel, Tamale. The objective of the training was to enhance the knowledge and skills of health professionals in diagnosing, managing, and treating pediatric epilepsy.
The training was conducted through a combination of lectures, case studies, and interactive sessions. A total of fifty-eight (58) health professionals attended the training program. The health professionals comprised of Doctors, Physician Assistants and Nurses.
The training was facilitated by a team of Paediatricians and Consultant Paediatricians, with expertise in the management of pediatric epilepsy. The training covered topics such as:
– Definition of seizure, epilepsy, epilepsy syndrome and classification of epilepsy
– Describe the different seizure types
– Give differential diagnosis for seizures, and distinguish epilepsy from syncopes and inattention
– Manage the first seizure
– Appreciate the contribution made by EEG and neuroimaging
– Describe the principles of treatment, the indication for anti-convulsants and the well-known side effects of these drugs
– Offer practical advice for parents and children with epilepsy
The training program was highly successful in achieving its objectives. The participants demonstrated a significant improvement in their knowledge and understanding of pediatric epilepsy. The training also helped to dispel common myths and misconceptions about epilepsy.
