TB is an AIRBORNE DISEASE thus of public health importance. It is spread through the air from one person to another when a person with TB of the lung or throat coughs or sneezes.
Symptoms in children are typically weight loss, cough more than 2 weeks, poor growth and drenching night sweats. TB can also present in so many others non-specific ways. BUT contact with someone with chronic (long-standing) cough is very important.
IN 2013, out of the 15,333 cases reported in Ghana, 773 (5%) were in children. This number represented only the officially reported cases. Data from the national prevalence study suggests HIGHER FIGURES.
The theme for this year is “REACH, TEACH AND CURE EVERYONE – STOP TB”
TB in children can be prevented when adults with TB are identified and treated early. TB is curable and should not be spiritualized. TREATMENT IS FREE FOR ALL even with “CASH N CARRY” or PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP
BCG should be given at BIRTH. Children less than 5 years old who are exposed to TB should be given prophylaxis if they are well. Otherwise they should be treated for 6 months.
Cough etiquette is very important – always cover your cough or sneeze!
Good ventilation in our homes and work places and avoiding overcrowding are all also important preventive measures.
HIV must actively be screened for in all children with TB and vice versa.
TB is a chronic disease requiring on going adherence counselling as the treatment is for at least 6 months. Nutritional and Psychosocial support are also very important.
TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE A TB FREE WORLD!
LET US ALL WORK TOGETHER TO ELIMINATE TB
